Imagine taking a steamy shower with the doors wide open to your own secret garden outside.
Recently, a pair of homeowners in Kirkland reached out to architect and Story Architecture owner Miriam Larson hoping to create a serene, nature-inspired haven of an indoor-outdoor bathroom. Together, they designed a modern, light-infused primary suite addition to their ranch-style home on Finn Hill, seamlessly blending the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living.
“Indoor-outdoor bathrooms have become more popular in recent years, but this is the first one I have designed with an actual door to the garden. It brings a very spa-like feel to space,” Larson told 425 recently.
The design and construction team crafted a space flooded with natural light, warm textures, and calming elements including a heated bathroom floor, glass tiles, and an external door in the bathroom/wet room, allowing the couple to bathe or shower with the door and windows open.
“When I first began working with the clients, they were under the impression that to add a primary suite, their only option was to put a second floor on their ranch-style home. We decided that we'd get much more out of an addition with a private courtyard on the first floor,” Larson said. “The addition is wrapped in striking siding from Nakamoto Forestry, providing depth and color to the exterior. Custom sliding-barn doors with contrasting black hardware adorn the bathroom and closet. A large, moving glass partition leads directly into the backyard living space. Coordinating track lighting and thoughtfully chosen light fixtures provide additional texture and warmth throughout. The result is a true urban oasis celebrating light, warmth, and the immersive beauty of indoor/outdoor living in the Pacific Northwest.”
