Snow Incoming! Are You Prepared?
Seattle friends, we’ve got a freeze warning starting Thursday! Are you ready to tackle the chill? Here are some quick tips to prep your home, plants, and pets for the upcoming cold snap. Read below for more details and let's get ready together!
Home Tips:
1. Keep pipes flowing with a trickle of water overnight.
2. Open cabinets for warmer air circulation.
3. Know the shut-off valve locations in case of a burst pipe.
Safety Tips:
1. Don't use a stove or oven to heat your home- keep the kitchen for cooking.
2. Place generators outside, never inside- that includes the basement or garage.
3. If using a fireplace, use a large glass or metal fire screen to catch sparks and rolling logs.
4. When using a space heater, keep it on a level, hard surface and ensure a 3 ft distance from flammable items like paper, clothing, bedding, curtains, or rugs.
Pet Tips:
1. Keep all pets indoors during the freeze.
2. Elevate dog houses, add cedar shavings, straw, or a blanket.
3. Check beneath your car before starting! Cats will curl up against almost anything to stay warm, including car engines.
4. Consider dog sweaters for walks and watch for signs of discomfort.
Plant Tips:
1. Bring smaller plants indoors, mulch or cover outdoor buddies.
2. Group large pots, wrap them up for extra warmth.
3. Move rosemary, citrus, or roses close to your house for warmth.
4. Turn off sprinklers, detach hoses, and wrap faucets.
Let’s stay safe! Keep yourself and your family warm & check on any elderly family or neighbors that may need extra blankets, winterizing their homes or a warm place to stay. Let's stay warm together!
